Calculate how much wallpaper you need for the children's room in 4 steps, without having too much left over or falling just short of that last roll.
In short:
On average, you get 3 drops from a roll with a standard wall height of 2.6m. This means you need approximately 2-3 rolls for an accent wall in the children's room. For a neutral wallpaper print that you want to use on all walls, you need an average of 9 rolls for a children's room measuring 3x4 meters and a standard height of 2.6m.
If you use wallpaper with a repeating pattern, you will usually get 3 drops from a roll (0.5x10m) with a standard wall height of 2.40 - 2.60m.
But of course, not every children's room has the same dimensions, so it is advisable to calculate it yourself.
What do you need to calculate the number of wallpaper rolls?
- The dimensions of your wall: the width and the height (tip: measure in several places on the wall, as it is not always straight and there can be a difference of a few centimeters. Always go by the height measurement).
- The dimensions of your wallpaper roll: these can sometimes differ in length and width.
- The pattern repeat (also called the report) of your wallpaper print.
Step 1: Calculate the total wall width
If you want to wallpaper one wall, you only need to know the wall width. But if you want to wallpaper multiple walls, you add up the widths of all the walls.
Step 2: Calculate the number of drops
For this, you divide the wall width by the width of the wallpaper roll.
For example: you want to wallpaper 3 walls with a width of 3.25m + 4.15m + 1.50m. Your wallpaper roll has a width of 0.53m. You calculate the number of drops by dividing the width by the width of the roll: 3.25+4.15+1.50 = 8.9m. 8.9m / 0.53 = 16.8 = 17 drops.
Step 3: Calculate the number of drops from 1 wallpaper roll
To calculate how many drops you can get from 1 wallpaper roll, you need to know the pattern height of your wallpaper and the height of your wall.
For example: Your wall is 2.60m high and the pattern height is 0.50m.
First, you calculate the number of patterns you need per drop: 2.60 / 0.50 = 5.2 = 6 patterns. 6 x 0.50m = 3m. You need 6 full patterns per drop, with a total height of 3m. You then need 3m of wallpaper per drop.
There is 10m of wallpaper on a roll, so that means: 10 / 3 = 3.33 = 3 drops from 1 wallpaper roll.
Step 4: Calculate the number of wallpaper rolls needed
In step 2, you calculated that you need 17 drops of wallpaper and in step 3, you calculated that you can get 3 drops from a wallpaper roll.
You calculate the number of wallpaper rolls needed by dividing the number of drops by the number of drops per roll: 17 / 3 = 5.7 rolls = 6 wallpaper rolls needed for this wall.
Of course, you can always use a wallpaper calculator that is often available on the website. Keep in mind that it does not always take the pattern or cutting loss into account properly, which means you can still sometimes fall just short of that last roll or have wallpaper left over.
You can use the following as a rule of thumb:
Most children's wallpaper on a roll has a regular pattern height of about 20-60cm, which means that in most cases you can get 3 drops from a roll with a standard wall height of 2.40 - 2.60m.
Do you want to create a wainscoting of about 1.20m high? Then you can often get double the width from the roll.
